At Otley Primary School we pride ourselves on promoting a range of activities through the taught curriculum, extracurricular activities and visits which promote an active lifestyle. We support the government’s initiative to combat obesity and enjoy being active.
Physical Education is important because many daily activities require a considerable degree of dexterity, teamwork and co-ordination. Pupils have two hours of PE timetabled per week through which we develop the six areas of activity as set out in the National Curriculum – Dance; Games; Gymnastics; Athletics; Outdoor and Adventurous activities; Swimming.
Our school vision is to create a curriculum that develops, motivates and enthuses every individual child to become a lifelong learner. We aim to give opportunities for all pupils to develop their leadership, coaching and officiating skills. As a school we want to create a buzz about physical activities where every child feels confident and ready to participate.
Children in classes 2 and 3 attend Fore Street Pool in Ipswich for a weekly swimming lesson in the spring term. All children should meet the basic swimming requirement (25metres) by the time they leave and most achieve significantly in excess of this. Pupils in years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to complete the National Cycling Proficiency scheme.
Our children have the opportunity to take part in local sports tournaments with other schools. The school has an extensive range of resources and the children enjoy the use of the playground area and the school’s own field on site.
In March 2013 the Government announced that all Primary Schools would be receiving a Sport Premium allocation for 2013 to 2016. This funding is to be used for schools to provide, develop and deliver sustainable high quality teaching in school physical education and sport. At Otley Primary School we aim have a positive attitude towards a healthy, active lifestyle. We expect to receive approximately £8200. Further information on how we intend to use this premium is shown in the attached document.
